Sheep

Hair sheep grow hair all winter, and then shed it naturally in big patches in the spring. Spanish explorers in the 15th and 16th century would bring sheep with them for meat. When the explorers would then leave, they had limited space. They would leave their excess resources they had brought with them, including the sheep.

Since they were abandoned on the warm, tropical island of St. Croix, the sheep adapted to the climate by shedding their hair. With natural selection over the centuries, the St. Croix sheep became a complete hair sheep and uniform phenotype. The lack of human intervention shaped the breed we have on our farm today, St. Croix hair sheep.

We breed hair sheep because of their hardy characteristics and natural shedding. There is an overabundance of wool in the market over the last 50 years, so it costs more to shear than you can sell the wool for. St. Croix has become self-sufficient due to isolation from humans and a low maintenance coat of hair. St. Croix Hair Sheep are easy to grow 100% on grass naturally and organically; which gives their meat amazing flavor and health benefits.
