We raise our cattle for both meat and for milk. We will have meat available for sale, along with fresh milk in the future! We have chosen Galloway as our primary beef breed, and Jerseys as our primary dairy breed. We will have both Jersey meat and Galloway meat for sale, and our Jersey girls will provide fresh milk for the farm. Both breeds are slow growing which adds significant flavor, tenderness, and health benefits. Blue Ranch Farms raises their cows on a 100% grass fed and finished diet, and both breeds do well on grass pasture.
Galloway and Jerseys are good for beef as they are small stature, have yellow healthy fat, marble easily on grass, have great flavor, and are very tender.
Our Jersey girls offer a superior milk that has great flavor, is very creamy, high in butterfat, and they produce well on a 100% grass diet. The Jersey girls are small in stature, therefore more energy goes into producing milk, rather than maintaining their body fat. We also have a couple of milking shorthorns that we have kept for breeding, and for dairy cows. These girls meet all of our desired criteria and perform well in our system. They are also very friendly girls and have become some of our favorite friends on the farm. Their names are Cinnamon, Brown Sugar, and Cookie.
We also have added two miniature Galloway to the farm, Melody and Lovely. The miniature Galloway are not just a novelty, as they are the perfect size for the small homestead to raise. In the future homesteads with smaller acreage will be able to purchase a miniature Galloway from us to add to their farm.
The Galloway breed originated in the rainy, bushy and wind-swept hills of Scotland. As one of the oldest breeds, they have evolved to survive very harsh conditions. Galloway cattle are very adapted to both winter and summer climates. They are one of the very few breeds with two layers of hair. One layer is a thick, soft under coat for warmth. The second layer is a long, course outer coat that allows them to shed the rain. This double coat offers a natural cooling benefit in the hot summers.
Galloway also can survive on browsing, while most cattle are 100% grazers. Not only can they survive on browsing, but Galloway are also able to gain weight and thrive, unlike other breeds. Our bull, Ray, weighs in at about 1 ton and enjoys a balanced diet of grass, brush, and an occasional apple or carrot from his human friends.
