All of our birds are free range, raised on pasture with access to their mobile coop. The birds are smart and have made friends with the livestock guardian dogs. It is quite common to see the dogs and a few of the birds curled up together enjoying a nap in the sunshine. We raise both laying hens and meat birds. We have chosen Freedom Rangers to raise as these broiler chickens are perfect for free-range environments. They grow at a moderate rate which results in succulent meat that has more yellow omega 3 fat and less saturated fat than faster-growing breeds.
Our chickens have a great life, spending most of their days pecking and scratching the ground and eating grasshoppers. They help us to keep the weeds down, fertilize the garden, and create nice, rich soil in the compost pile. We also have a few roosters that help to keep the predators away, eat bugs, and do a great job of taking care of their hens.

We have a resident turkey; his name is Tom. He flew in a few years ago as a surprise guest. He invited himself to stay… forever…. and we are glad that he did, as he also is a guardian of the flock. Tom keeps the roosters in line by fluffing out his feathers and parading back and forth watching over the roosters, as they watch over their hens. It is quite the pecking order that has naturally taken place. We will be raising Turkeys for Thanksgiving as well.

The ducks stay near the creek year-round and help us by maintaining the grass and weeds, eating pesky bugs, and providing entertainment with their antics for us to enjoy. We will have duck eggs and meat on a more regular basis soon and look forward to sharing those with our customers.
